Therapeutic Options
Orthopedic Surgeon Konstantinos Mesiakaris MD, MSc in Mytilene
After I have the Diagnosis, in my Practice I offer a wide range of therapy options. The clinical picture and the accompanying health problems determine the solutions which will be the first therapeutic choices.
Among the treatments are:
- Pharmacological pain management
- PRP-Therapy (Platelet-Rich-Plasma)
- Hyaluronic acid therapy
- Injection and Infiltration therapy
- Kinesio Taping
- Trauma immobilization
- Orthotics
- Acupuncture
- Orthopedic Reflexology
- Maitland Consept Manipulations
Pharmacological pain management
Pain management is significant as far as either acute or chronic pain is concerned. Different types of medicines aim at alleviating discomfort and improving the quality of life. Many new types of treatment options as PRP, Hyaluronic acid, Infiltrations, Kinesiotaping and Acupuncture are used also regularly in my practice. Apart from these, the pharmacological methods of pain management are an essential component of pain management strategies to achieve pain relief.
Again, the proper Diagnosis is the key component because every medicine has a specific pharmacological mechanism.
PRP-Therapy (Platelet-Rich-Plasma)
Tendons, ligaments, muscles, and joints are vital components of our musculoskeletal system. In acute injuries and in chronic mechanical overloading all these structures begin to degenerate. Human body produces a series of substances with purpose to heal the damaged tissues but in many cases this isn’t enough.
Platelet-rich-Plasma (PRP) is obtained from a blood sample that is centrifuged to produce a high concentration of platelets. These are bags which carries proteins as growth factors and anti-inflammatory agents. The injectable insertion of all these proteins to the damaged body area have a strong regenerative effect.
Areas of application:
- Osteoarthritis of the large joints (hip, knee, ankle, shoulder, elbow)
- Tendon damage
- Tendon attachment inflammation
- Muscle injuries
Hyaluronic acid therapy
Inflammation and degenerative changes in the joints, lead to cartilage destruction and to osteoarthritis. These changes provoke pain and deterioration in mobility. The hyaluronic acid which is contained in the healthy knee joint breaks down.
In modern Orthopedics, we are trying to minimize the above-mentioned deterioration process and a crucial partner is Hyaluronic acid.
Hyaluronic acid injections help to restore the normal lubricating action which is damaged after the degeneration. This provides pain relief and better joint mobility.
Injection and Infiltration therapy
Infiltration is the treatment of pain conditions using medical injections. The infiltrated medical substances help not only to relieve the pain but also to reduce inflammation and to promote healing.
In my Practice I also use cortisone injections, intramuscular infiltrations, trigger point infiltrations, Mesotherapy and other.
Cortisone injections are powerful anti-inflammatory medications. They are more effective in alleviating the pain which is caused by joint inflammation.
Intramuscular and trigger point injections can help soothe chronic pain conditions. They are helpful for the areas of neck, shoulder, arms, legs, and lower back. They can help to stop the vicious cycle of the repetitive micro-trauma on these areas, which leads to damage on muscle fibers and provokes chronic pain. After the treatment we can succeed a significant relief from myofascial pain syndromes, fibromyalgia, tension headaches.
Kinesio Taping
ButtonKinesiotaping is a method in which we apply an elastic therapeutic tape to the skin and that helps to reduce the pain and the inflammation in various medical conditions.
The technique of the application and the percentage of applied stretch determine the targeted body tissues and the final correction with which we succeed.
With taping we succeed different types of correction:
- Mechanical correction
- Fascia correction
- Space correction
- Ligament/Tendon correction
- Functional correction
- Lymphatic correction
Trauma immobilization
After an accident it is common to experience pain in the damaged area. Different types of body tissues could be damaged as: ligaments, tendons, muscles, neurons, and bones. This leads to many types of injuries such as: dislocations, sprains (most common in the ankle joint), strains (hamstrings and lower back), muscle tears, tendon ruptures and fractures. With a thorough clinical examination and the help of the Ultrasound, the doctor can diagnose the type of the damaged tissue. If it is necessary, I will prescribe to you x-rays and in rare cases CT-scan and MRI.
When injuries lead to instability and pain, then it is necessary for the proper immobilization, which decreases the likelihood of further damage. Thus, we protect the soft tissues around the damaged area, alleviate the pain and accelerate healing.
The characteristics of every trauma will determine the preferable immobilization. Slings, boots, splints, bandages, and plaster casts are commonly used.
Orthotics
In many cases, different types of changes in foot biomechanics such as flat feet, high arches, hallux valgus or accessory bones can provoke pain in ankle and foot articulations.
A doctor-designed orthotic will minimize the discomfort and the pain, by redistributing the pressure on the feet’s bottom. Thus, orthotics can reduce the chance of injury.
The Doctor uses “Formthotics” which are having established, distinguishing features that naturally fit every foot.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture involves the insertion of very thin needles through your skin at strategic point on your body. Acupuncture points stimulate the central nervous system. This releases chemicals into muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These biomechanical changes stimulate body’s natural healing abilities.
In many different cases as sprains and strains, muscle soreness and tendonitis, acupuncture can decrease inflammation and speed the healing process.
The World Health Organization endorses acupuncture and clinical studies have shown it to be beneficial for many conditions as: chronic pain, migraines, neck pain, back pain, tendonitis, sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis.
Orthopedic Reflexology
A Hippocrates holistic approach to alleviate local foot problems.
